TOPSHAM, the historic port of Exeter has become the premier book on the town being created from the photo archives of Topsham Museum and private collectors. Photographs have been carefully restored for future use to promote the history of the town.
The book relates to the relationship with the Exe Estuary and changes to the foreshore and emphasises the role of Topsham as one of England's most important ports. The early photographs of wooden ships using the Quay together with delightful studies of working fishermen are classic records of the old port . Early aerial views show the layout of town and street scenes from around 1900 show the traditional character of the town, with many locals shops and businesses being recorded. A fascinating feature is Topsham Lock with the local lock keeper and nearby the well known Topsham ferry. The relationship with the Exeter Ship Canal is also recorded together with a number of events and civic occasions. Aspects of life around the town are also included.
The book contains 250 photos..
